02 - Bexley to Petts Wood - 22nd October 2023 (12.3 km)

Sunday was a radiantly sunny early autumn day after storm Babston blew through on the few prior days bringing quite a lot of rain. So it was a great opportunity to go grab the second leg of the London loop.

I took the 122 bus to Lewisham to Lewisham at 11 am from just outside home and changed to the Dartford train to get me to Bexley. Note that Bexley is not the same as Bexleyheath.

The very initial part of the path just outside Bexley station was closed because of something network rail were doing. A young couple with their baby pointed that out to me just before I got to the blockage. We had a short conversation about them using Outdooractive, or at least me recommending that they should before I left them to their own devices. I didn’t take much of a detour to be able to get past the blockage for another way anyway.

I found the Sun was a big problem, at least in the first part of this walk, and I don’t know about the last part yet, because it’s up at about 45° in the sky, and shining brightly, which is lovely, but it also is entirely blinding. And I don’t seem to be able to cope very well. I really, really do need a peeked cab or sunvisor to help with these lovely sunny days.

There’s a lot more people in Scadbury Park / Little Wood than you would imagine. It feels like a somewhat remote woodland, and a bit muddy too, but if you sit in the seat in the middle of it at a junction of the paths, you will find on a sunny afternoon that there are just loads of families with dogs walking past. You tend not to see them if you are moving, but if you sit still, they will come past you. The woodlands are really very nice although the path is continually uphill. But nonetheless it’s a prolonged period walking though just woodland, even though there are quite a few people there on a Sunday afternoon.

Turns out that the fastest way to get home from Petts Wood yet again is to take two buses to 208 and 227 but not the train in any case.
